Spinal Stenosis

  • Spinal Stenosis is a condition involving any type of narrowing of the spinal canal or nerve root canals.  The narrowing results in compression of spinal nerves causing low back pain and leg pain.

  •

  • There are many forms of spinal stenosis falling into 2 main groupings:

  1. Congenital

  2. Acquired

·        Standing upright can block the outflow of blood from around the nerve.  Congested blood then irritates the nerve and pain travels into the legs.

·        Symptoms include pain with walking that can radiate into one or both legs.  Bending forward, leaning on an object while walking, sitting or lying down generally relieves symptoms.

·        Diagnosis

  •  Done by a health care practitioner and will include a detailed history/physical along with X-rays, CT scan/MRI scan.

·        Treatment options

  1. Activity modification

  • Using a cane or walker to flex forward while walking

  • Exercise using a stationary bike

  1. Pain Medications

  2. Epidural Steroid Injections

  3. Spinal Surgery
