Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

 

·        The Sacroiliac Joint (SI joint) connects the sacrum/spine with the pelvis.  The joint does not have much motion however the joint transmits all the forces of the upper body to the hips and legs.

·        The Sacroiliac Joint acts as a shock absorber and is very strong.

·        Sources of Sacroiliac Joint pain are usually an alteration of normal joint motion.

  • Too much movement:  Hyper-mobility

  • Too little movement: Hypo-mobility             

 

  • Diagnosis              

  • Physical exam :

  • The pain is typically felt in the low back or buttocks.  The pain can radiate down the leg and usually remains above the knee.               

  • X-ray

  • CT scan

  • MRI scan

  • Sacroiliac Joint Injection/Block

·        Treatment Options:

  • Physical therapy

  • Water therapy

  • Heat and/or cold therapies

  • Exercise and good posture

  •  Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

  • Chiropractic manipulations

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)

  • Sacroiliac joint injection

  • Radio-frequency ablation (Sacroiliac Joint rhizotomy)

  • Smoking cessation (maximizes healing potential)

  • Botox injections
