Ice Therapy

·        Many times pain can be caused by (or worsened by);

  • Fall

  • Motor Vehicle Accident

  • Lifting a heavy object

  • Sports injury

  • Awkward movements

  • Medical procedure

·        Ice can help with pain by:

  • Slowing the inflammation and swelling.

  • Numbing the sore tissues.

  • Slowing the nerve impulses in the area (interrupts the pain signal)

  • Contracting veins/tissues and reducing circulation…once cold is removed blood rushes into the area bringing nutrients to allow injured muscles, ligaments, and tendons to heal.

·        Ice massage is most effective in the first 48 hours after the injury.  May be repeated several times a day.

·        Ice massage:

  • Freeze water in a paper cup and peel the top down to expose the surface.  Apply ice gently in a circular motion.  Limit massage to 5 minutes to avoid ice burn.

·        Ice compress:

  • Commercial ice pack, bag of ice wrapped in a towel, or a bag of frozen peas/carrots all work well for an ice compress.  Place the compress on the sore area for     10-20 minutes.  Use a barrier (towel) between skin and ice to avoid an ice burn.
