Ice can help with pain by:

Slowing
the inflammation and swelling.

Numbing
the sore tissues.

Slowing
the nerve impulses in the area (interrupts the pain signal)

Contracting
veins/tissues and reducing circulation…once cold is removed blood rushes
into the area bringing nutrients to allow injured muscles, ligaments, and
tendons to heal.

Ice massage is most effective in the first 48 hours after the
injury. May be repeated several
times a day.

Commercial
ice pack, bag of ice wrapped in a towel, or a bag of frozen peas/carrots all
work well for an ice compress.
Place the compress on the sore area for
10-20 minutes.
Use a barrier (towel) between skin and ice to avoid an ice burn.
